Mediterranean Jewel Box

A beach bungalow with ocean views in the Mesa of Santa Barbara incorporates specimen aloes, jewel tone Mediterranean flowering shrubs and a mix of succulents and agaves. We collaborated with the owners; a couple with an award-winning New York City garden who travel the world and fell in love with the wondrous colors, textures, classic and modern plantings of California to create their oasis. The lawn was replaced with a river of drought tolerant, walkable dymondia and a steep hillside was graded and terraced to showcase beautiful aloes, dramatic prides of madeira and a tucked away deck above. We opened up the entrance and added a curved full dimension stone stairway and enhanced the side gardens with curving stone pavers lush Mediterranean plantings.
